How To Get Citizenship In Australia

July 20th, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Becoming an Australian citizen is the topic of this installment of our guide to emigrating to Australia

To become a formal member of Australian society you need to apply for citizenship there. If you do so and are accepted then your rights, privileges and opportunities will be equal to those who were born in the country, and you’ll no longer need to apply for visas to reside there.

Certain criteria are in place for you to be eligible for Australian citizenship; you should have been residing there for the last 2-4 years (exactly how long differs on personal circumstances), you must be planning to live there long-term, you should over 18 years old, and must be of good character (which is judged on references you provide and your criminal record). Additionally, a computerized test of 20 multiple choice questions on a range of aspects of Australia must be passed.

Information and advice regarding methods of application, the application process and fees can be found on the website of the Department of Immigration and Culture (DIAC). Carefully read through this before downloading an application form from the website or collecting a paper version from a branch of the Australian High Commission. At $200 per application, it isn’t cheap, so be sure that you’re eligible and have all the necessary documentation before proceeding.

The status of the visa you have when you apply, or any future ones you apply for, won’t be affected by a failed citizenship application but you won’t get your application fee returned to you. To save yourself both the time and expense incurred by an unsuccessful application (though either ineligibility or incorrect documentation) you might want to consider consulting with a migration agent, who will be able to advise on your likelihood of gaining citizenship and also guide you through the process.

Once the application process is complete, and you’ve satisfied all of the citizenship requirements, you’ll be required to make the Pledge of Commitment. This is done at a special ceremony, which will culminate in you being presented with a Citizenship Certificate by an official from the Australian government.

Australian Immigration Guide - The Cost Of Living In Australia

July 20th, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

The cost of living in Australia is the topic for this installment of our guide to emigrating to Australia

It’s human nature to convert prices back to your home currency when you first arrive somewhere new and prices in Australia can seem cheap when doing this. However, once you start earning Australian Dollars you’ll find that the money doesn’t go as far as you first hoped. Living is less expensive in Australia, but that you may well earn less and will possibly be taxed more.

Still, most find themselves in a better all round position after moving to Australia. It has some of the least expensive cities in the first world, despite also being ranked as one of the top countries in the world for quality of life. In particular, Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne, rate highly when expense and quality of life are cross-indexed.

Approximations vary depending on whether you opt to live in the more expensive major cities or the cheaper provinces, but a sensible outlay for rental or mortgage for a family of four would be around $500 a month. On top of that would be about $150 for water and electricity (which is considerably less than you would expect to pay in other countries with a similar level of development).

As for food, when compared to the US it costs around the same, but that’s still 25 percent less than most countries in Europe; for a family of four, $700 would be a fair estimate for monthly outgoings on it. When you also consider that schools are free and healthcare is subsidized, you can see who Australia is such a popular destination with those looking to emigrate.

It’s worth noting though that manufactured items (such as clothes, electronics and automobiles) cost more than you’re probably used to, and that, despite petrol being well-priced, the larger than normal distances between locations (particularly outside of the major cities) mean that travel costs will likely be higher than they are now. Still, the cost differences on these aspects are outweighed by the savings elsewhere.

How to Find the Best Cancun Vacation Rates

July 19th, 2009    Subscribe To Our Feed

Cancun Vacation

Mexico has many delightful holiday resorts and none of them can beat Cancun for its beautiful white sand beaches, entertainment and sporting amenities. This area on the eastern coast, in the state of Quintana Roo, is internationally popular with tourists. It’s surrounded by a bay, lagoons and the Caribbean Sea. A Cancun vacation can be a very active affair to play with your glass photo vase or can you can sunbathe and watch the world go by.  Mexican pesos are the official currency but most places will take American dollars. Getting around the island is fun on a motorcycle or buggy, which are available for rent.

The district known as the hotel zone is the most expensive, with hotels, bars and restaurants at the top end of the market. Some hotels offer opportunities to view ancient Mayan ruins. There is an aquarium where visitors can feed the sharks and swim with dolphins (hopefully, not the other way round!)

Downtown Cancun City, approached by bridges to the mainland, is generally less expensive and has familiar chain stores, flea markets and cheaper restaurants. The wide thoroughfares are lined with pretty white buildings. Downtown is more popular for a Cancun vacation for young travelers, particularly from the US. The hotels are less expensive and there are lots of dance clubs.

This area is a haven for water sports enthusiasts. You can take a break from chilling and go for a banana ride or have a go at parasailing, snorkeling or jet skiing. There are also scuba diving sites, a real treat in these clear waters and reefs.  Fishing or shopping for personalized bridesmaid frames is also a popular activity, including sportfishing for marlin, dorado and bluefin tuna etc. You can charter a boat with all the equipment supplied. Keen golfers and tennis players love a Cancun vacation too because the facilities are world class. There are 18 hole championship courses and areas for children to practice their golf too.

There is a water park near the town of Punta Nizuc, which has rivers, rides, slides and wave making machines. Other attractions include an alligator farm and a botany park. The temperature is usually between 26oC and 36oC and there is often a pleasant breeze. Hurricane Wilma hit in 2005 and tourism was put on hold for a while but businesses made a rapid recovery for personalized gifts and tourism doesn’t appear to have suffered. A Cancun vacation is a good excuse to practice your Spanish, although English speakers will find that most people speak English too.
